Wood Cremation Trays vs. Cremation Boxes: Which Is Right for Your Operation?
Not all cremation containers are built the same, and they shouldn’t be. The right container for one facility may be the wrong choice for another. The decision between a wood cremation tray and a cremation box, or something in between, comes down to how remains are handled, how far they travel, and what level of structural support is needed throughout that process.
Understanding the differences in construction between these several options helps funeral professionals make informed purchasing decisions.
Cremation Boxes: Construction & Key Specifications
Cremation boxes are the most widely used container type in the industry. Constructed from corrugated material, they are lightweight, cost-effective, and purpose-built for the cremation process.
In addition, cremation boxes are also highly versatile. With multiple strength options and configurations available, facilities can balance performance and cost without compromise.
Alternative Container includes leak-resistant interior protection as a standard feature in all cremation boxes.
Economy Cremation Boxes
Economy cremation boxes are designed for operations where remains are handled minimally between transfer and cremation. Alternative Container offers these boxes in two wall strength levels, giving facilities the option to increase structural integrity without moving to a premium product.
The two economy cremation box models offer lid heights of 4″ and 10″ and are dependent entirely on operational preference. All economy box models are assembled with zip ties at each of the four corners.
These various options allow facilities to increase durability while maintaining a lower price point.
Premium Cremation Boxes
Premium cremation boxes step up to double-wall construction, which significantly increases load-bearing capacity and resistance to flex during transport.
Two different exterior options are available for our premium cremation box models: brown kraft or woodgrain. These exterior options could be useful for facilities where presentation carries weight alongside performance.
Both of our premium cremation box models are assembled with two zip ties, one at the head and the foot of the box, for secure closure.
Wood Cremation Trays: Built for Strength and Stability
Wood cremation trays represent the opposite end of the spectrum. Where cremation boxes offer flexibility and economy, wood trays offer structural permanence.
Cremation trays are the preferred choice for crematories that require a rigid, heavy-duty solution that can withstand significant weight and demanding handling conditions.
Construction Details
Our cremation trays are built with:
- A 1″ by 4″ pine frame
- A 3/8″ plywood base
- An oyster white exterior casing
This construction helps the tray maintain its shape and resist warping under pressure.
Available Sizes and Configurations
- ACB 9-01 Standard Cremation Tray (24″ x 80″)
6 strap handles, single securing strap - ACB 9-02 Midsize Cremation Tray (25.75″ x 77″)
8 strap handles, dual securing straps - ACB 9-03 Oversize Cremation Tray (32″ x 86″)
8 strap handles, dual securing straps
The strap handle configuration on each cremation tray is designed to distribute weight evenly during movement, reducing strain on staff and the risk of mishandling.
For crematories handling larger cases with regularity, wood cremation trays are a reliable option to be utilized in your operation.
When a Cremation Box Needs Reinforcement
In many cases, a standard cremation box works well. However, certain situations call for additional support.
This typically includes:
- Heavier remains
- Longer transport distances
- Repeated movements
Rather than switching to only using a wood cremation tray, many facilities choose to reinforce their existing setup.
Built-In Reinforcement Option
The ACB 13-01 Two-Pack Cremation Box includes a 12″ by 70″ wood support board fixed to its base.
This added support helps distribute weight evenly and reduces the risk of bowing or buckling during transport. The pre-folded two-pack format also improves efficiency during storage and use.
Standalone Support Boards
For facilities that prefer to keep their current boxes, support boards are a standalone option that offers a simple upgrade.
- 3/8″ plywood construction
- 12″ by 70″ sizing
- Compatible with a variety of box types
Simply center the board in the base of the box before use. It is a straightforward, cost-effective way to reinforce any cremation box without changing your existing supply chain.
Choosing the Right Mix for Your Facility
The choice between wood cremation trays and cremation boxes is not strictly one or the other. Most facilities benefit from keeping a mix of options available.
Our economy cremation boxes are well-suited for on-site cremations with minimal handling. However, our premium double-wall boxes are the better choice when transport is involved or when presentation matters.
The two-pack box with built-in support boards or a standard cremation box paired with a support board addresses cases that require additional structural confidence without the cost of a full wood tray.
Matching the container to the situation helps improve workflow, reduce risk, and maintain consistent performance.
Selecting the Right Option for Your Facility
Every facility operates differently. Your cremation containers should support those workflows with reliability, durability, and dignity at every step.
At Alternative Container, we build our products to perform consistently across all of these use cases. If you are evaluating your options or want to talk through what makes the most sense for your facility, our team is here to help. Contact us to get guidance or request a quote.
